Understanding SSDI and SSI Benefits

  • SSDI- Social Security Disability Income

SSDI is an insurance program which is provided by the federal government. This program is designed to help disabled people who are unable to engage in substantial gainful activity. SSDI provides benefits to people who are completely disabled and cannot work for at least one year. This program is administered by the Social Security Administration (SSA). SSDI pays cash benefits to disabled persons every month for as long as they remain disabled.

  • SSI- Supplemental Security Income

Receipt of SSI is contingent upon an individual making less than a certain amount of money per year. The income requirement for receiving SSI benefit can be complicated and depends upon many factors.

The SSA will look at the entire family’s income as well as the assets of the claimant. If the claimant makes some income while receiving SSI benefits this income is also taken in calculation. If the calculation of income does not exceed the amount set by SSA standards then the claimant may be eligible for SSI benefits,SSI benefits are provided on a monthly basis to people who are 65 and older as well as low-income children and adults who are disabled from birth or are disabled with little or no work history.
