What Benefits Do Most Claimants Miss?
Approval for disability benefits is not always the end of what your household is entitled to. Your work record may support additional payments to people who depend on you — and many claimants never find out, because nobody tells them to ask.
These are called auxiliary or dependent benefits. They do not reduce your own payment.
Who May Qualify on Your Record?
- Your spouse, if aged 62 or older, or caring for your child under 16 or a disabled child — see spousal benefits
- Your unmarried children under 18, or under 19 if still in secondary school — see children’s benefits
- Adult children disabled before age 22, who may collect on a parent’s record indefinitely
- A divorced spouse, where the marriage lasted at least 10 years and they have not remarried
- A surviving spouse, under separate widow benefit rules
The Family Maximum
There is a ceiling on what one record can pay. The family maximum generally falls between 150% and 180% of your own benefit amount, covering all dependents combined.
If the total owed to your family exceeds that cap, each dependent’s payment is reduced proportionally — your own benefit is not touched. Understanding this in advance prevents unpleasant surprises when the award letter arrives.
SSDI Only, Not SSI
This is a distinction that catches people out. Family benefits are payable on SSDI records, because SSDI is built on your contributions through payroll taxes.
SSI is needs-based and pays only the disabled individual. If you receive SSI, your family members cannot draw on your record — though they may qualify independently.
